Different Types of Photographic Portrait

When we speak of a portrait we can have different types that I will explain in this article, hope you get them all. The terminology can differ from country to country, but the important thing is that you know the different types of pictures that you can take from the same person and situation, it all depends of the porpoise of the photo and what attributes you want to enhance.

General Plane. This is the type of picture where the whole body appears. Therefore we have a whole plane of whom we are taking the picture, form foot to the head. This is the farthest picture we can take.

American Plane. This name come from the times where the Western pictures where the hit. In these films it was very important that the guns had an important part of the shot, so that is where they cut it. Some people call them three quarter plane. In this plane the picture cuts at the knees.

Middle Plane. This type of photographic portrait covers from the head to the waist. In the case that the picture is from someone sitting in a chair you have to cut the picture at the middle of the thigh. This type is perfect to enhance the beauty of the human body, so it is very used in fashion. It is also great to take pictures of two people.

Short Plane. In this plane we have to take the picture from the head to the middle chest. It is great where the focus of the picture is great but it doesn't have a great background.

First Plane. This is the ultimate portrait picture, it cover all the face and part of the shoulders. Great for getting the intimacy of the person in the picture.

Detail Plane. This type of plane focus in one small part of the body, not necessarily the face. It is recommended to take a general picture with the special focus on the detail and then cut it in the computer, instead of making a zoom in the object.
