Job Description

A latent print examiner is in charge of handling identification functions, including fingerprint classification, photography, searching and filing, operating Automated Fingerprint Identification System, and processing of crime scene and evidences. Those new in the job will learn how to perform the task of doing fingerprint comparisons.

Duties and responsibilities include taking live scan and/or inked fingerprints for non-criminal and criminal matters, obtaining the suspect's prints for the purpose of comparing and identifying fingerprints, making accurate and sound decisions on identifying and classifying the fingerprint patterns using AFIS, using the camera equipment for investigating on the crime scenes and performing the necessary laboratory processes, and analyzing the crime scenes in order to collect materials and trace evidences. You may also be asked to testify in hearings and in court trials regarding crime scene and physical evidence examination.

Educational Requirement

Graduation from an accredited university or college with an associate's or bachelor's degree in law enforcement, scientific, or related field is required in order to become a latent print examiner. Successful completion with at least a passing grade of 2.0 or higher in at least two science classes in college is also required. Any combination of education, training, and experience that is equivalent to at least one year experience in classifying, filing, and searching for inked fingerprints or at least a year experience in crime scene processing. If you want to be promoted or advance in this career, you have to pursue a continuing education. A degree in law enforcement or criminal justice will help a lot.

Latent Print Examiner Salaries

The salary range for a latent print examiner is between $30,000 and $150,000, with large federal and state agencies paying more, but still the salary depends on the location, company, and experience.
