Small features like how you wear your slouch hat will enhance your Civil War uniform impression - without spending another dime. A generic felt hat with a medium size brim worn wither with a flat or bee hive top possibly with some type of crease or the hat tilted off to the side is what I have observed in photographs most often. Wearing the brim up was the rage during that time period.

Wedding Photography Dos and Don'ts

Should you or should you not be the camera guy in a wedding party is the question. You will not get paid for the favor, so I am hard pressed to come up with one good reason why you should do it but I can give you many reasons why you shouldn't.

Don't feel bad letting your friend or family know that you will not be able to take on the responsibility because for one it is the most important day of their life and they should really be looking into hiring a professional, not to mention working the camera and all the gear will pretty much ruin your chances of having any fun at the party.

But for some reason if you still decide you want to be the camera guy, here are some tips that will help you survive the day. First of all make sure you have the right equipment to do a semi good job. And by right equipment I mean at least a 5 to 7 megapixel digital SLR camera, so the resolution can support up to 8x10 pictures. If you can only have one lens, go with the 18 - 80mm, preferably high density lens to get sharp pictures. But if you have a choice of lenses then get 2 - 3 to cover close-ups, regular portraits and group snaps. For close up photography, prefer to get a fixed focal length 50mm or 55mm lens. For regular portraits, you can use a 28 - 80mm lens with low dispersion. And last but not least for group photography which is integral to Pakistani and Indian weddings, a wide angle 24mm - 28mm lens with low distortion would do fine.

Another thing to never forget is an external flash light for your camera. Reason for that is the mini built in flashes on the cameras don't have enough power to have much of an impact on your pictures at bigger venues. You should also familiarize yourself with flash photography before the event as at times it can be very difficult to get the pictures with correct exposure and settings with an external flash attached on the camera. Your pictures will either flat out by excessive light or will turn out to be too dark if you don't know what you are dealing with. Amateurs have their best chance sticking with automatic settings on the new super expensive DSLRs rather than trying their luck with manual settings. And last but not least don't forget to get a diffuser for the flash light to get that even tone across your pictures.

I became acquainted to photography only a little while ago. My friends had recently taken up this new hobby and went on and on about how great it is asking me to give it a try. I was a bit reluctant at first because the truth is I had never given it any thought.

To my surprise, my friends did not own the type of basic digital camera you are used to seeing everywhere. They had very large, high-tech devices with long noses, equipped with high resolution lenses which had a such a high zooming capability that one may have mistaken them to some paparazzi. One of them had taken up photography lessons and had influenced all of the others to buying this sort of cameras. When he first came holding that huge camera around his neck we were all very curios to discover all the features it had.

This was the first step to discovering the beauty of photography. We had no idea then that mere curiosity will take us ti a totally new world that we would have never discover otherwise. Then we started to practice, taking a few pictures every now and then and learning how to use the various features of the camera. We began to practice on how to focus effectively without cutting out on balance and then moved to zooming. My first shots were not all that great, but after a few days of practicing and more practicing | started to see some progress. For one week I used the SLR of one of my friends.

When I started to really enjoy it, I decided to buy my own camera. My friends told me that was their plan all along. If I knew it back then I would have probably been mad, but now I was thankful for making me discover photography. After practicing for a week or so, we decided we could start our journey to becoming real photographers. We began with portrait photography and then decided to move on to landscape pictures. We went out on a trip just to improve our skills. The destination we chose was supposed to be a great target for photography as it featured beautiful forests, a great atmosphere and plenty of wildlife. When we got there we were more than impressed - it was really breathtaking. We couldn't have asked for a more suitable place for taking photos.

Then I really felt something different for the first time in my life. Something that cannot be explained in words. It just felt and it was amazing. Photography can teach you to appreciate things in a totally different way, regardless of how small or big they are. You see the beauty in every detail an then how all of these little things complete each other to make a whole - and this offers you a completely new vision. I now think everyone should try photography at least once. Even if only because it gives you the opportunity to see more beauty in the world - and the feeling is incredible.

Photographing dance groups and playgroups can be extremely lucrative. The vast majority of participants are children. You will find that their parents cannot resist buying photographs of their children.

On investigation locally you will find a number of various styles of dance schools and many playgroups. Most dance classes take place at night or on a Saturday morning. There are also associated competitions and exhibitions, which provide photo opportunities, with the potential for extremely large reprint orders. Playgroups generally meet during the week, although I have come across a few who meet at the weekend.

Don't Try To Do It Alone!

Do not attempt initially to advertise to individual parents. Approach the dance school or playgroup organiser with the proposition that you can both benefit from photographing the children. Call them, arrange to meet, remember the personal touch will be your key to success.

This offer could include helping with publicity photographs, framed pictures for decoration of the premises or as is often requested a one of payment or donation to allow you to set up stall. It would be helpful, although not essential, to show some samples of your work.

Publicity Material

Do not assume that children will inform their parents!

You must publicise your service. After you have arranged a mutually convenient date for the playgroup or dance group shoot you should set about ensuring that all parents are made aware that you will be there on that date.

Provide the organiser with a publicity leaflet, which he or she can send home with the children or their parents who arrive to collect them.

This leaflet should initially inform parents that you will be present on a particular day and that you would like to photograph their children. Say that you will be providing a minimum of two proof shots from which they can choose one or more to be enlarged as part of a package deal of reprints.

I have found from experience that this method i.e. giving the parents some degree of choice, results in a larger number of reprint orders, than taking only one shot.

Do Not Hard Sell!

In this first publicity leaflet you must make it absolutely clear that parents will be under no obligation to buy, if you do not you are in danger of losing custom before you have started. You do not have to hard sell; once parents have seen the shots of their children they find it difficult not to buy. Your most effective selling material will be the finished prints of their children!

Keep Paperwork Simple.

You must design a form for recording the names and addresses of the children against relevant image numbers as they are photographed. This should be as simple as possible, it may have to be filled in quickly, I once photographed forty-eight playgroup children within a one and a half hour period!

You should also design reprint order forms, which will allow ease of ordering both special packages and reprints at normal prices. It is a good idea to print both sets of prices on the same form, this has two purposes. It will highlight to the customer how much they are saving on your normal reprint prices, it will also serve as a reminder that the package deal prices are not what you would normally charge for other types of work. You do not want to be associated with doing a 'cheap job'.

Even if your orders will be placed and delivered by hand ask for the full name and address and telephone number to be written on the order form, this will provide you with accurate information and give you potential contacts for any future promotions. Remember this is about building long-term relationships.
