With film photography, a photographer was limited to actually taking the picture that was in front of his camera at the time. Either way it was a very expensive venture. Yes, some manipulation could be done in the darkroom, but it was a tedious and messy process.

As long as you have photo editing software and a picture of the Eifel Tower and another of your dog, you are good to go. Simply cut out the image of your dog and drag him into the Tower picture and place him where you want him. Needless to say, this can be a very fun process. The possibilities are endless.

The problem, of course, is that we are limited to pictures that we actually have. This is where digital photography backgrounds come into play. There are several online companies that sell packages of these backdrops or even monthly access to their entire database.

There are many categories to choose from, too. There are packages designed specifically for wedding backdrops. Can't afford a wedding at the beach? That's okay, you can still have the pictures!

No one would want to go to the expense of an airline ticket to get a picture of themselves in front of the Washington Space Needle. Now you don't have to, and yet you can have the resulting picture.

Social is supposed to include fun but the first thing to note, they require vigilant attention to be beneficial. Any neglect of sustaining a conversation with subscribers easily results in being forgotten. They require hands on management. It is not unusual to find the top social networkers spending the better part of a day (Every day) on social networks. For publishers this could result in neglecting your blog or website spending less time creating content.

Social Networks such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter are designed for social connections whether it is with friends, family, coworkers or business associates. They are also utilized by small businesses and large corporations as marketing tools and customer service venues.

Seattle Fashionista - A Profile in Online Education

Kristin Connell keeps pretty busy these days. As the manager for Shoefly, an upscale Seattle shoe boutique, she spends between forty and fifty hours a week in the shop--that is, when she's not planning special events or jetting off to Los Angeles for a week of meetings with wholesalers.

While she values her professional experience, Kristin also knows the importance of a solid education. In order to advance her career in the world of fashion, she's pursuing a bachelor's degree in fashion design. As many working students know, making a school schedule dovetail with professional responsibilities can be tough. For Kristin, the solution includes participation in online coursework. I sat down with her in her Capitol Hill apartment to get the 411 on her online fashion design class.

Mr. Smith: Your fashion design program includes both online coursework and classroom work, so you have the best of both worlds. What are you currently studying?

KC: I'm taking a few courses, but the online course is fashion sketching.

Mr. Smith: Which involves what?

KC: It's the start of creating a piece or line of attire. You develop a basic visual concept--a sketch--for a piece of clothing. From there you can draft patterns and actually create the piece.

Mr. Smith: Could you describe your online interface?

KC: It's basically an all-in-one website. There's a place for you to get assignments, a place for class discussions, a link to lectures and research materials, and the grade book, which is where you can check your grades after you turn in a new assignment. That part's helpful, because you can monitor your progress daily.

Mr. Smith: How often does the material update?

KC: Well, the syllabus pre-established at the beginning of the quarter. But the teacher can post assignments as often as he likes. The discussion boards are constantly updating, throughout the duration of the class.

Mr. Smith: Could you describe a week of coursework?

KC: The lesson plan follows the textbook, so we do a chapter each week. The teacher posts a reading assignment, discussion questions, and homework. We use Adobe Illustrator to design fashion sketches, and turn it in as an email attachment when we're done.

Mr. Smith: How would you compare your online class to a traditional brick-and-mortar classroom?

KC: It's actually more strenuous. It's not like a normal class, where just showing up gets you a participation grade. The onus is on you to participate heavily. For example, with the class discussion board, you have to post often and your posts have to be insightful. I got nabbed on that a couple of times.

Mr. Smith: And compared to traditional classroom, how much classmate interaction is there?

KC: Well, of course you don't get face time, but you have about as much interaction. It was a requirement for us. With the discussion boards, each student has to respond to the teacher's question, and then to at least two classmates per posting to receive credit.

Mr. Smith: What's your favorite thing about your online coursework?

KC: Well, while you do have deadlines, you can still work at your own pace. Even though we had weekly deadlines, I was able to turn in my work on the first day of the week.

Mr. Smith: How about your least favorite thing?

KC: To be honest, I wasn't a big fan of my professor, but that really didn't have anything to do with the online format of the class.

In addition to her online coursework, Kristin also attends a four-hour pattern-drafting course each week (the brick and mortar being necessary for hands-on participation). While her schedule is tight, she remains determined: "I work as hard as I do because I know it's worth it," she says. "I think it's important to have goals and to make a point of pursuing them."

Well spoken, I think. After all, if--as Thomas Paine once observed, "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly," then busy professionals can look to Kristin and others like her, for a model. After all, Kristin and her fellow students may be determined, but they aren't all that unusual. As far busy professionals who moonlight as students go, Kristin's really a textbook example.

Diving Florida's East Coast

From Saint Augustine to Key West, there is a smorgasbord of diving adventures awaiting you with a pointed difference in each of the regions diving Florida's East Coast.

South Florida's visibility is much more clear than in the northern part of the state. And there are great wreck dives and rock ledges off the Central East Coast. More reef area off the Southern East Coast of Florida makes underwater photography a memorable addition to your dives.

Starting in the North East Coast of Florida from around Saint Augustine, diving the artificial reef systems and spear fishing are popular diver activities. The best time of year to venture up here for a dive is during the summer months when your visibility is around thirty to fifty feet. Expect a seven to twenty mile ride out to dive at depths of sixty to one-hundred feet. Try to spot a Hogfish while you are out taking in the site of the Triggerfish and Grouper.

Diving Central Florida's East Coast offers a variety of challenging dives from WWII freighters and Monster Hole, to spear fishing and bug snatching. You can bag a monster lobster here. Summer months, again, are the best time of year to dive with visibility fluctuating between twenty five to seventy five feet, the best vis being off shore approximately eight to twenty miles.

Areas for beach dives start becoming frequent as you progress south beginning with Vero Beach. As you venture out around two to four hundred feet the views begin happening of sponges, soft corals and tropical fish hanging by the rocky reefs in depths of ten to thirty feet.

The city of Fort Pierce leads the introduction to the diving off Florida's South East Coast. Three particular dives stand out in this section, a Civil War era paddle wheeler, the site of Urca de Lima Florida's first Underwater Archaeological Preserve, and then there is Inlet Park which has a large variety of rock formations and ledges, with monster lobsters and outstanding fish observation or photography.

Stuart, Florida dives are not for the beginning diver. Visibility is low, the massive rock reef system begins about three miles offshore at depths of sixty to sixty five feet, and the outer ledges are at depths of one-hundred and twenty to one-hundred and sixty feet. Fewer divers mean a large variety of fish and monster lobster, but take this with a local Dive Master.

Florida reefs really start to emerge as you take the plunge diving Florida's East Coast. A drift diving paradise from West Palm south to the Florida Keys offers reefs, wrecks, cleaning stations, multiple species of marine life, and the commencement of the warmer waters with good visibility.

Getting down toward the Keys, dives are more regulated, but beautiful and brilliant with lots of wrecks and marine life. Bring your camera on these dives, you might run into a Goliath Grouper, Moray Eel, or Caribbean Reef Shark. Some of the best photo opportunities diving Florida's East Coast can be found in South Florida. Always check with your local dive shop for current conditions, plan your dive and dive your plan.
