How Does Green Screen Work? Explained Easy in Plain English

How Does It Work?

Using software, images or movies remove the green screen background, while superimposing the new picture so that the subject could stand against a backdrop or another layer of background video.

Examples of Images Edited with Chroma Key (Chromakey) Technique

Wedding Photography - Wedding photographers benefit from shooting pictures using chroma key technique and swapping images with scenes couples request. Posing in front of the screen, all of the sudden, couples can appear on the beach, inside the church, in Las Vegas, in countryside or whichever location possible.

Weather Broadcast - Weather men/women and news anchors stand in front of green screen inside the TV studio, and radar map or temperatures appear in place of the screen, enabling news crew to engage in interactive broadcasting.

Special Effect Movie Scenes - Video editing tools, such as Final Cut, Sony Vegas, and Adobe Premiere allow even the small budget production to add Hollywood style movie effects.

What Tools Are Required to Chroma Key?

1. Background - First and most importantly, a green screen. It can be a painted wall or rolled fabric, even a ready made product purchased from an online retail store will work.

2. Images - Images and backdrop to replace. Movie if replacing another movie clip.

3. Light - Lighting is the most challenging task. The subject needs to be evenly lit, and if there is not adequate light shooting indoor, shoot outdoor instead. Preferably, overcast weather days provide the right amount of light source.

4. Software - Tools such as Green Screen Wizard effectively removes the screen to superimpose an image or movie file.

Green screen allows a subject to appear in front of an image with the use of chroma key technique. Chromakeying enables the removal of the screen, and by layering another image underneath it, the subject appears over the image as she is actually in the image.
