Advantages And Disadvantages Of Online Photography Courses

Photography is a wonderful skill to have. But the art of taking photographs is a very precise art that requires a lot of assistance and guidance. There are a number of classes or courses you can take that will help you become a proficient photographer. Most of these classes are taken in the conventional manner in which a teacher, tutor or professor guides you through the entire learning process. But for those who do not have access to such classes the online courses are quite good too.

The courses offered online are extremely beneficial because your location will never be an issue. Plus you have the freedom to learn at your own pace allowing you to learn better. Another great benefit of this course is that it is amazingly cost efficient. Regular courses are far more expensive than the online versions and therefore they are not available to many people because they are not able to afford the regular classes. But the online courses make it possible for everyone to learn. Also the student no longer has to travel to and from the regular classes thus can be time saving. Also, if the student goes away for a brief period of time, there will be no gap in the learning process.

But there are a few disadvantages to this course as well. The problem is that this art requires a lot of practice. You need to have hands on experience to take good pictures and to be able to implement all that you have learned. But if you are taking the course online this requirement cannot be fulfilled. Also, in regular classes there is a teacher who can critique your work and tell you where you have gone wrong and how you can improve. This cannot be done on the online courses. Also, since it is up on you to take the classes whenever you want, you could lose the flow by taking too many gaps. In such cases, students typically learn very little and the course is completely lost on them. The course can become a waste of money.

Every venture and task always has its benefits as well as a downside. So the disadvantages should not discourage you from taking the course. If you are interested enough and disciplined enough then there is a lot this course can teach you and it can make you a very skilled photographer.

Gift Ideas For Senior Citizens Perplexing You? 5 Tips to Finding the Perfect Gift For Baby Boomers

Gift ideas for senior citizens can be perplexing. Not to worry, I have 5 tips to help you find the perfect gift for seniors citizens in your life. Many gift givers have the perception that as we age, we have accumulated everything we need in life. In some case that may be so, but, just because we are getting older, does not mean we don't enjoy or appreciate a meaningful and well thought out gift.

Tip #1 As we age, our needs change. Our thoughts focus on our past, what we accomplished, what we wanted to do, but postponed due to life's responsibilities that came our way. Many fondly recall the dreams, plans and hopes of their youth. There are many that have things in their life that they miss or wish they had a chance to do. Now, because of their age, they think that this is no longer a possibility. Trust me, there is a gift giving idea in those postponed dreams and plans. And all you have to do is discover what they are.

Tip # 2 Every aging senior has different personalities, lifestyles, interests, financial and health situations. This should be considered when exploring gift giving options.

Take time to consider the senior adult for whom you want to choose the perfect gift.

Are they an active senior, with lots of ability to get around independently?
Are they involved in church, community or group activities?
Do they live alone?
Do they have limited access to social functions or activities due to illness or inability to drive? What keeps them from getting out an about?
Do they have hobbies or outside interests?
Have they had a change in their physical or mental abilities that has affected their lifestyle?
Are they able to take care of their home environment, yard or pets?
Is their financial situation a problem or is money never a concern?
Are they an individual that is open to trying new things? Or are they an individual set in their ways?

Tip #3 To accomplish the goal of finding the perfect gift for the aging senior in your life will take a little thought and exploration on your part. Take time in your everyday conversations to ask questions about the past and the present interests. Make this a part of your regular conversation. Gift ideas will present themselves.
Don't hesitate to ask "Is there any thing that you wished you had done?"
"Is there any thing that you miss doing or would like to do some day?"
"Have you ever considered ________(this may be dancing lessons, painting, doing wood working, trying a computer etc) ?"

Tip # 4 If you have done your exploration, you should have come up with some great gift ideas. Or maybe you still feel stuck on finding the perfect gift. Now it is time to be creative. If you have assessed the aging senior's situation, you can determine what is important to them. Would they benefit from some special one on one time with you?
Spending uninterrupted and unrushed time, to do something that your aging senior will enjoy, not only will be appreciated, but will have the benefit of creating a memory for you and your aging senior.
If they are an active senior, they may be open to trying something new and different. You may want to plan a trip or activity that would be fun. Don't forget that learning is a lifelong activity. Check out the local colleges, YMCA's and online courses that may be of interest to your aging senior. You may be able to introduce a new hobby or activity that will improve or maintain mind and physical fitness.

Tip #5 Do not discount home made gifts or projects. Plan a family project where the entire family can get involved. You may want to create a family tree, organize family pictures. Create a slide show with old family pictures and have your senior incorporate family stories behind those pictures. Or create a video of your aging senior talk about the family history. This could be an on going project with a planned family debut. Plan a party and 'red carpet' event for the entire family to view.

Finding gift ideas for seniors can give you an opportunity to learn and create a stronger bond between you. Finding a gift for baby boomers is giving something needed, something wanted or something they have longed for, but never expressed. Given with lots of love, will make it the "perfect" gift.

Digital Schools For Photography - How To Choose The Right One?

Digital schools for photography are emerging each day with various fee structure and courses. Earlier, photography was not a profession for everyone due to the huge expenses allied with films and its processing. There was not a huge market to sell someone's photographs but today, clicking and sharing your photographs with the world just requires a good digital camera and a personal computer. Photography has stretched out into several streams and the equipments used in the photography industry are constantly changing.

Choosing the right school is the most important decision before you venture out in this field. For beginners and professional photographers; there are several courses available that can improve their knowledge and skills. Some tips for choosing a good photography school are:

General Photography Courses vs Specialized Courses- General photography courses usually target students who want to get an overall idea about photography. These courses usually cover topics such as exposure, composition and lighting techniques. These courses give you an outlook of the types of photography and how to advance in photography career. General Photography Courses are ideal for those who want to learn photography from scratch. However, if you are a photographer with basic knowledge in various photography techniques, a specialized course can be the best choice for you.

Photo Editing Software- Even though Adobe Photoshop is the most famous photo editing software, there are plenty of specialized softwares that can make your digital photography experience even better. When you approach photography as a career, a significant level of knowledge is required in photo editing softwares as well. Make sure to choose a course that offer basic photo editing classes as well.

Certification- Many institutes claim that their certificate is recognized by various organizations. However, check the value of these certificates before enrolling for a course. If you are a successful photographer, certificates may not be much of a help but for beginners, a good photography certificate can be an added advantage.

Fee- It is not necessary that you learn more if you pay more. There are many colleges that charge you a hefty sum but the course may not be actually worth it. Ask for the course curriculum and compare it with other institute's curriculum so that it will be easier for you to find out a better idea about these courses. If you find that a particular institute's fee is not worth it, move on and enroll for a better course.

Curriculum- Photography is an art as well as a science. A good photographer should know the artistic and scientific sides of photography for achieving a successful career. Make sure that your course covers the necessary scientific aspects of digital photography and editing.

It is not necessary that you should choose photography schools that offer you a university diploma or degree. There are online schools that offer digital trainings. These courses also work pretty well if you are willing to learn and practice what you learn in the course.

Creative Photo Printing Ideas

If you think printing pictures on glossy and matte-finished paper are your only photo printing options, think again. By using contemporary technology, more can be done with your photos. Whether you want to create unique photo items at home or have them professionally printed, many possibilities exist for creating personalized items and gifts.

With a personalized computer, printer, scanner, camera, and the right supplies, you can create unique items using your photos. Pictures can be made into decals and iron-on transfers to be put on t-shirts and compatible fabrics. Gifts for grandparents can be made with their grandchildren's pictures on them, such as canvas totes. You will stand out when you present business cards with your face printed on them to potential customers and clients. Even personalized greeting cards can be made at home by using your computer. The materials you need to make these projects possible can be purchased at local hobby and business services stores, as well as online.

Photo printing services go beyond merely printing pictures; you can order products from companies that feature your unique photos. Many people have family photo greeting cards professionally printed. Others have keepsake calendars created with a special photo printed for each month. Mugs with special photos printed on them can be ordered, too. Photo mouse pads, posters puzzles, coasters, magnets, tiles, and playing cards are just a few other items that can be made through professional photo printing. Even personalized stickers aprons, purses, and vanity bags can be made using images of your choice.

Other unique items can be made using your personal photos, too. In the US, postal stamps can be printed with your favorite photo on them. These stamps can be affixed to your letters and mailed to family members and friends. Quilts with family photos can be made by printing the pictures on fabric and then crafted into a family heirloom. Various companies even make photo throws to be used for warmth or displayed in the home.
For a unique cake decoration, your pictures can be turned into an edible art transfer to adorn a birthday cake.

Printing photos to put in picture frames, photo albums, and scrapbooks aren't your only options anymore. Your photos can be preserved and displayed in many fascinating ways. With the right equipment and material or photo printing company, unique products and memorable gifts and keepsakes can be created using your photos.

A Freelance Writer's Dilemma - When to Take That Leap

Okay, you hate your job. All you want to do is write; it is your lifelong passion. You can taste success. You know you can make it as a high-priced freelance writer. You've heard the stories; devoured the ads for all those writing courses that promised you fame and fortune. You can see yourself sipping a cool Margarita on some exotic beach, smiling, pecking away at your laptop, knowing full well that you were producing another great masterpiece.

Then your boss screams, "Get back to work!"

That's right, it's back to reality and the 9 to 5 grind. Life ain't fair.

But before you tell your obnoxious boss to shove it and storm out into the cruel world, relax and look before you leap. Think about this: Many well-known writers had to work for a living and write whenever they had the time... just like you.

For instance, Kurt Vonnegut worked at General Electric for years in the PR department. Walt Whitman served as a lowly government secretary. William S. Porter (O'Henry) was a bank teller... before bank funds were found missing. Lots of writers, such as Aldous Huxley, Joseph Heller and Dorothy Parker, worked full-time as copywriters during the day. Others worked for newspapers, like Erma Bombeck, Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck. And if you ever wondered why Agatha Christie knew so many ways to poison people, it was because she worked as a pharmacist for years. So, you see, you are in good company if you're writing and still holding down your day job.

Now if you really can't take your present job anymore, look around for another one. Some writers do better with physical or "mindless" jobs that rests their creative minds for writing later on in the evening. I found an even better way: I often took jobs where I could work and write at the same time... and get a paycheck at the end of the week! Impossible, you say. No. I've done it. I produced four novels at work as a bridge tender, working the night shift. Years earlier, I worked as a night security guard and night parking lot cashier, polishing off a batch of columns, stories and articles. Of course, I made sure the writing didn't interfere or cost me my job. But I was always aware that writing was my primary focus. The other was but a means to keep a roof over my head.

You may want to also consider a "regular job" in the writing field. My 16 years in newspapers taught me the value of deadlines, interviewing techniques and writing quickly and accurately. I strongly recommend any aspiring writer to put in a stint at his or her local community newspaper. Unlike large dailies, these smaller papers offer wannabe writers an opportunity to be more creative. The diversity of covering everything from hard news to features to photography to production to circulation will give you a foundation unlike anything taught in today's liberal arts colleges.

Writing is a continuous learning experience. And today, thanks to the Internet, you can gain knowledge with a click of a mouse. Ebooks on writing or the writing profession is a cheap way you can get information quickly and easily. Tips and insider secrets are there for the taking. So don't hesitate to learn and keep on learning and writing. When you have gained enough knowledge and confidence in your writing ability then, and only then, it may be time to go out on a limb.

But don't take that leap until you...

1. Have two year's worth of savings in the bank, just in case.
2. Have sufficient knowledge of your field to be classified an expert.
3. Have sold enough of your work to know you can sell more.
4. Have the complete backing of your family members.
5. Have finally had it with your regular job!

If you've checked all five, then go ahead and take that leap. But watch that first step. It can be scary. Then again, so is a life of unhappiness and watching your dreams fade away. It's your choice. Good luck!

An Olympus E5 Review: My Own Experiences

I wanted to take a few moments today to write my own Olympus E5 review and share with you my experiences with owning and using this camera. To date, I have owned it for over four months now, and while I am not a professional photographer, I have taken a few courses over the years and wanted a camera that would provide me with greater freedom to explore the depths of my knowledge. I did a lot of research before I decided to buy this one, and after experiencing its features for myself, I wanted to share with you what I think about them.

Image Quality Compared to My Nikon

Before I decided to buy this camera and write my own Olympus E5 review, I was using an older Nikon. I had bought it used several years back, so I imagine it was pretty outdated when I bought it. Yet I have to say that the image quality of this new Olympus is head and shoulders above what I was getting with the Nikon. This camera features a 12.3-megapixel Live MOS sensor and it also has a TruePic V+ image processor. In addition, it has image stabilization for five shutter speeds, which gives you greater control in your image results. The shutter speed is 1/8000th of a second, which is truly impressive for action sequences.

Outdoor Use

I will admit that I was pretty timid with taking my Nikon outdoors and really testing its limits. I knew it was older and didn't have weatherproofing features. I have to take a moment, though, and talk about my experiences outdoors with the Olympus in my Olympus E5 review. This is a camera that has a thixomold, magnesium-alloy body, dust-reduction system, and supersonic wave filter. It was made to go outdoors and to be used to the maximum extents you can imagine. I've taken it to the Grand Canyon, Moab, and other outdoor destinations in the last few months, and it has held up beautifully.

Movie Function

I will mention in my Olympus E5 review that the reason I bought this camera was not for its video capabilities but rather for still shots, yet it does have the ability to capture video at 30 frames per second with 720p. It also comes with automated controls as well as manual controls for shutter speed and aperture. I have toyed around with these features and have been able to produce some really splendid videos of wildlife that I've encountered outdoors on my adventures.

The Bottom Line

I will close this Olympus E5 review by saying that this is a high-end camera that may be priced out of some people's budgets, but the fact is that it is not designed for everyone. It does have professional-level features that you really do need some photography experience and skills for in order to fully utilize. For someone like me with just a few photography classes completed, it is an ideal camera that gives me creative control over my images and yields professional results, but that is not overly complicated in its features.

Lighting for Portrait Photography (Part 3) - Selective Control of Exposure

In Part 2 of this article, we explored the fundamentals of controlling overall exposure of a composition within the camera. The methods discussed are very effective for achieving the desired exposure of the overall image, the depth of field, and the perceived sharpness and graininess of a photograph. However, the photographer will generally want to emphasize a particular element within the composition, enhance a particular perspective, or suggest a particular mood. This may be accomplished in part, through carefully choosing or designing the elements of the composition. We have many classic rules to guide us in composition (e.g. the rule of thirds, negative space, color theory, etc.) Also, we may give special attention to posing our subject, or choosing a creative perspective or angle of exposure to emphasize a particular element, perspective, or mood. In my experience however, effective control over photographic lighting within a composition can be the difference between a masterful work and a mere snapshot. Light is the paintbrush in the art of photography. Controlling it is essential.

Over the years, many tools for effectively controlling lighting of a photographic composition have been devised. From scrims of all sorts, to flags, snoots, barn doors, and grid spots, to reflectors, umbrellas, and soft boxes, the tools in a photographers tool box may be neatly divided into three main classes. There are the tools for subtraction of light, the tools for addition of light, and the tools for modification of light.

Tools such as scrims, flags and even overhangs in the outdoors, are used to subtract light from the subject selectively to control emphasis, perspective, or mood. Filters and gels are a special case of subtractive tools. Some filters are used to subtract specific regions of the light spectrum, while gels are used to modify the color of light striking the subject also by subtracting specific regions of the light spectrum. Tools such as reflectors are used to add light selectively to the subject to control emphasis, perspective and mood within the composition.

Tools such as snoots, barn doors, grid spots, umbrellas, and soft boxes are used to modify a property of the light source used for photographic lighting. The properties commonly manipulated by the photographer are relative size of the source, specific placement of the light on the subject, fall off, and diffusion. In Part 1 of this article we learned that, "A light source's relative contrast is generally determined by the size of the light source and its distance from the subject". The light modifier tools of an indoor (studio) photographer function to control the effective size of the light source and thus control the contrast and fall off of the light striking their subject. For example, a large soft box may be used to modify a light source to increase it's effective size, and thereby decrease the contrast of light striking the subject. On the other hand, a six inch parabolic reflector may be used to decrease the effective size of the source and increase the contrast of the light striking the subject. Generally the light modifier tools can be ranked in order of increasing size (decreasing contrast of light striking the subject): grid spots, 6 inch parabolic reflector, 16 inch parabolic reflector, 30 to 36 inch umbrella, small soft box (24"x36"), medium soft box (36"x48"), and so forth. The snoot and barn doors are typically used more to control specific placement of the light on the subject than as a means to control the level of contrast.

A basic understanding of the behavior of light, and how to effectively modify it using simple tools to control emphasis, perspective, and mood, is essential to your success as a photographer. Part 4 of this article will discuss the major classic styles of photographic lighting and we will see how these subtractive, additive, and modifying tools are effectively used by the photographer to create a masterful composition. Until then, good day and happy clicking.

The Benefits of Professional Photo Printing

Many people who own digital cameras are choosing to do their photo printing at home instead of having their photographs professionally printed. By using printers connected to their computers or portable photo printers, digital camera users are able to print their own quality pictures. However, for various reasons, some people still prefer to have their pictures developed by a professional.

Some people simply like taking pictures. They are not interested in printers that make it possible for them to print pictures at their leisure. They do not care to shop around for photo paper with different finishes. They just want to enjoy their pictures without dealing with any equipment other than their cameras.

When having photos printed professionally, people don't have to concern themselves with the supplies or equipment needed to produce their pictures, such as photograph paper, ink, or printers. Although digital photo printing at home is convenient, photographers must maintain their photo paper and ink supply. Additionally, when people print their photos at home, they must make sure that their equipment is ready for printing. For instance, the heads may have to be cleaned several times on a portable printer before clear pictures can be printed. However, when having photos professionally printed, it's the company's responsibility to maintain the inventory and equipment.

Professional photo printing services offer a variety of photo finishes and sizes. However, people printing their pictures at home may be limited by paper and printer compatibility, as well as the size of the photos that can be printed on their home printer or portable printer. Although a personal computer printer may be able to print large size photos, most portable printers produce pictures 4" x 6" and smaller.

Another benefit of having pictures professionally processed is the company's quality guarantee. Most photo processing services don't expect customers to pay for substandard photographs. If they print photos that are unsatisfactory, most will offer to reprint them or not charge their customers for them. However, if a person prints a poor batch of pictures at home, he or she cannot be reimbursed for the ink or paper used to produce them.

Despite having to pay for ink and photo paper, many digital camera users who print their pictures at home instead of using a professional seem to save money. However, photographers who want professional prints and desire to save money can find online photo processing services who charge less per picture than local photo printers. By uploading their images to company websites, digital camera users can have professional pictures printed and mailed to them in a few days for a reasonable price.

Regardless of the technology that makes photos printed at home look professional, some people aren't interested in investing in the equipment or learning to use it. Although printing pictures at home is convenient for some people, buying the supplies and maintaining the equipment is inconvenient for others. Consequently, many photographers would rather turn to a professional for their photo printing needs.

Film School Secrets: Is Film Education Important to Start Your Career?

Especially for an artist, to be able to perform his art, it is not really necessary to get the education of this art from a school. Because it is a matter of talent and spirit.

However, just like the all other sectors, education has a function of accelerating the experience and helps more quickly learn the necessary information. Without training, you can start performing any art in maybe 10 years, this period may decrease to 3-4 years with proper education. Other than these advantages, education is not very important in the field of art.

Education is always very important. You can educate yourself in any field. It is not possible to be a good artist without proper knowledge. If you are a painter, it is useful to know your brush and paints well. But that's all.

If you want to compare the films of educated filmmakers and un-educated filmmakers, it is better to make your decision by evaluating their work. Sometimes a filmmaker with no education can produce amazing films based on their talents.

It is not possible to be a good filmmaker if you do not enjoy playing with toys. Because film industry is full of toys; the set, the shooting moment is full of toys like equipments; the camera, lights, set cars, costumes, decor, accessories. Films can be done with these things.

It is hard to make a film for a person if he does not;

  • enjoy spending time with these things

  • understand the mechanics of a camera

  • find camera a fun and entertaining thing

  • feel admiration to the camera

Because in the film industry, there are too many instruments between the art and the artist. Of course this is true for all other art fields, but the technology is much more important for filmmaking than other branches of art.

If you want to learn filmmaking you can educate yourself by watching different sort of movies. Because you are learning a language; the cinema language. To be able to speak in that language, it is vital to give your time to learn this language. The second most important thing is shooting and editing. Trying to create stories by adding the plans one after another will be very useful for developing your filmmaking skills.

Both watching other films and shooting your films whenever possible is advised. Because filmmaking is the field of story telling. You cannot learn telling stories without listening stories of others and attempting to tell your stories to others.

Online Photography Lessons - Discussing the Advantages of Going Digital

Digital photography takes away the pain out of photography in a number of ways: Absolutely no film implies zero clutter and also reduced expenditure. No lenses equals zero mess, and when you get accustomed to using a digital camera, digital photography can even enable you to capture far better images.. Took a image you did not like? A digital camera enables you to examine the actual picture upon an LCD browser upon the rear of the camera right after you took it, and remove it.

Are you looking for just a fun little digital camera to shoot photographs of family celebrations and knees ups? Or maybe, are you currently interested in developing your digital photography training skills and getting proficient at photograph capturing in addition to editing? No matter what your digital photography objective, you need good, sharp pictures and also a photographic camera which is easy to use.

The 4 standard styles of digital camera are:-

1) Ultra-compact- relating to the size of a charge card, and also fits very easily into the front pants pocket of any jeans.

2) Sub-compact- can fit effortlessly in a shirt pocket.

3) Point and Shoot-normal dimension camera with increased characteristics, and requires a camera case.

4) Single Lens Reflex (Slr camera) - top quality photographic camera. It's got the appear and feel of the 35 mm, with a removable zoom lens.

Digital cameras give you pictures which are incredibly portable. It is possible to transfer your photos to a pc to e-mail or perhaps edit having programs just like Adobe's PhotoShop, screen-print them out, or produce slide shows - all that and not having to drop off film as well as spend on developing it. A few digital cameras even enable you to take brief movies.

These days, additionally PDAs, cell phones as well as watches have got into the industry of digital photography. Underneath we shall speak about the basic principles regarding exactly how digital photography operates. This is important in picking a digital camera.

Pixels

Any digital image, or photograph, is made up of countless miniature dots. The volume of pixels determines the quality - otherwise known as the resolution - within the image. With digital photography, once you press the camera's press button, a pc chip referred to as the "charge couple device" (CCD) inside the digital camera instantaneously files the place, coloration, and also brightness of every pixel. Put all of those pixels in unison you have the photograph!

Resolution is actually a key point when choosing a digital camera. Superior resolutions cost more, but additionally provide photos that can be enlarged digitally while not reducing quality. When looking for a 'point and shoot' photographic camera to play with for entertainment search for cameras with a resolution approximately three to five mega pixels that enables you to print great top quality 4" x 6" upto 8" x 10" paper prints.

Batteries

The choice regarding which kind of power supply your digital camera takes is an essential one. Alkaline Double a batteries tend not to possess a charge for the duration lithium battery packs do, specially if you work with a flash. Nonetheless, the ability to purchase AA battery power anyplace could be important, especially if people take a trip.

Lithium battery packs are more endurable, nevertheless they cost a lot to substitute. Nickel Cadmium battery power are usually chargeable. You must fully discharge them prior to re charging, or you will end up with very poor effectiveness. Another kind of standard rechargeable battery power is the Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH). They are presented in any regular sizes, and last for something like four hundred charges. They're most likely your very best purchase. Lion (Lithium Ion) battery packs survive almost twice as long as others do, and are typically purchased as being an 'extra'. These are newer, unavailable in all sizes, and not as accessible as the other types tend to be.

Memory space

Another important consideration for digital photography will be how big the memory card in the photographic camera. The actual memory is what stores any photo inside the dslr camera - think of it as your camera's hard disk. Digital images of high quality occupy a lot of space. You are able to accommodate more low-resolution as compared to high-resolution shots onto an individual unit card.

You can hold multiple memory space unit cards, however who aspires to set up that ultimate shot and comprehend your digital camera has all of a sudden run out of storage space? If the digital camera shoots between three to five mega pixels, a storage device with 128 MB to 512 MB really should keep you snapping shots until eventually ones fingers get worn out.

Other great benefits to think about when choosing your brand-new digital camera include size and weight. A more substantial photographic camera is easier to keep stable, a more compact camera is easier to stow and lug around. A few cameras give you a multiple exposure selection that enables you to take a pre-programmed amount of exposures when you click the press button. Your self-timer will help you to effortlessly shoot a picture immediately after a pre-programmed time period. The hand held remote control selection enables you to manage the camera a distance. Additional options include things like date and time period references that will stamp the image, and screen the data while viewing the picture via the digital camera or perhaps software programs, and sound recording, which lets you add captions to the photographs.

The majority of cameras come bundled with applications that allows you to manage your pictures. The kind of software can vary according to each and every digital camera, and yes it must be considered when purchasing the camera.

There's no such thing as the ultimate photographic camera. You must think about your photography targets, your own finances along with your knowledge degree to work out exactly what photographic camera options stands out as the best for you.

Nine Tips For Applying Make-Up For Photography

There are many ways to apply make-up for photography. These tips are just the basics. With a little practice and experimentation, you should be able to create the correct look for the perfect photograph.

1. Use cover cream underneath the eyes to hide dark circles and cover any puffiness. A green tinted cover stick works well for this.

2. Apply a foundation close to the skin tone over the entire face, directly over cover cream. This will even out the skin tone and also cover any blemishes or marks. Using a small sponge, blend into the hair line and down to the neck area.

3. To apply blush, measure the starting point as a two-finger distance from the side of your nose, and brush across cheek bones all the way back to the ears blending into the hairline.

4. Use a slightly darker shade of contour powder to define the cheekbones more prominently.

5. Also brush some contour powder in a "V" shape under the chin to strengthen the jaw line and across the forehead to unify the facial tone.

6. Eyes are usually the most difficult part, and the way they are done depends on the individual. Start by lining the eyes with a dark pencil, both on the lower and upper lids. Apply shadow to the lids, normally using a lighter shade under the brow line. Extend the shadow out past the corner of the eye using an up-sweeping motion. Powdered shadow works best when blending several colors together.

7. Brush mascara on upper and lower lashes, using a comb to separate them if they clump together.

8. Outline lips with a lip pencil or brush. Thin lips can be shaped to look larger and thick lips made thinner. Fill in with appropriate lipstick color.

9. Dust entire face with a translucent powder to absorb moisture and eliminate shine.

The Basic Elements You Will Find in a Good School

If you are interested in finding a school for your child, it is important to know and understand what basic elements you will find in a good school. Education is the core foundation of success when it comes to your child. You pay attention to the foods that your child consumes, you make sure that they have comfortable and clean clothes, and that they have the best medical care. Why should you treat the decision to enroll your child in a particular school any different? It is important to ensure that you take your time and learn what makes a school successful. The following elements are essential to choosing the perfect educational environment:

1. The first element that you should consider are the test scores that the school receives when it comes to standardized state tests as well as the report card averages. Schools that are productive and appropriate for your child's education will receive scores that are above average or better.

2. The next element that makes a good school is when that school permits families to take an active role in their child's education. They should welcome your child, you, and the input that you have concerning your child's education.

3. High expectations are also an important element of success when it comes to educational facilities for children. Kids should be urged to do their absolute best and should be given educational enrichment courses in order to do so.

As you can see, there are many different aspects of an educational facility that you should pay special attention to when it comes to your child's education. By ensuring that the school that you are interested in has the three basic elements that were outlined here, you can rest assured that your child will be successful and that your family will enjoy the opportunities that the school has to offer.

Photography Basics: 3 Components of Exposure

Shutter Speed: The shutter speed controls the time aspect of exposure by controlling how long, or short, the shutter stays open. A longer shutter speed will allow more light to enter the camera and hit the image sensor, such as 1/30th of a second. The shorter the shutter speed the less light that will hit the sensor, such as 1/500th of a second.

Aperture: Aperture, or the diameter of the opening in the lens, controls the amount of light that can reach the sensor. Smaller f-stop numbers, such as f3.5, allows for more light to hit the image sensor. A larger f-stop number, such as f22, will allow less light to hit the sensor. Note: Aperture also controls the depth of field in a photograph. The aperture range is based on the lens itself, not the camera.

ISO: ISO determines how sensitivity the camera's sensor is to light or in other words how fast it collects light. A lower ISO, such as 100, means the camera is less sensitive to light. A higher ISO, such as 800, makes the camera more sensitivity to light.

Proper Exposure (Putting it all together): All three components work together, yet independently, to create proper exposure. The shutter speed and aperture have an inverse relationship. If you turn the aperture down one f-stop, say from 4.0 to 3.5, you double the amount of light in the exposure, so in order for you to have proper exposure again, you have to increase the shutter speed by one click thus halving the light in the exposure. You might be asking yourself how do I determine what is a good exposure? Well, both in the viewfinder, and on the LCD display, there is a meter that shows you the exposure level for what the camera is pointed at. The middle, or zero, would indicate a proper exposure. The negative side would indicate an underexposed photo and the right side would indicate an overexposed photo. There are a number of ways to get the same exposure level for any given photograph. For example, a shutter speed of 1/50, f-stop 5.0, ISO 200 would be equal to 1/60, f4.5, 200 or 1/80, f4.0, 200. If you were to bump the ISO up to 400 (one change in ISO equals to 3 clicks of shutter speed or f-stops) so then exposure would equal 1/50, f 7.1, 400 or 1/100, f5.0, 400 for the same scene.

How to Shoot Studio Quality Prints Using Natural Lighting

There's a lot to be said about a fully equipped photo studio, filled to the brim with expensive lights and equipment just waiting to be applied to some artistic task. Unfortunately, most people who love photography as a hobby, don't have the budget to spend money on a professional lighting equipment setup. In fact, if you enjoy photo as a hobby but not as a profession, there's really no reason to spend so much on something that you will use so little. Here are some ways that you can get studio-quality images simply by using the light you have around you.

Use Your Flash Correctly

A direct flash will often make the subject have harsh shadows or look shallow but if used correctly it can be a great lighting tool. Focus on bouncing it off surfaces around your subject whenever possible, and only use it to fill in the shadows from the front. Think about it this way - if the image you are building looks like you won't need a flash, that's a perfect time to use one for additional fill.

Make Your Own Reflectors

One of the keys to studio lighting is "bouncing" the light off of reflectors or umbrellas to create full, soft, and even light. Although you do need a few lights to do this properly, you can still mimic the effect by making a few homemade reflectors. If you need help softening the shadows created by one main light source (like the sun), you can reflect the light by using white surfaces like a large white poster board or a big piece of Styrofoam or even a white bed sheet.

Start Painting

Whenever you go to shoot, always remember that all surfaces either reflect or absorb light so keep this in mind especially when designing a room for taking pictures. If you know you're not able to add a bunch of lights to a room, try painting the entire thing white (even the floor, if possible). Having your walls white, they will help to bounce the light around so you'll have a more even look.

Watch Your Time

The brightness and quality of the light will change depending upon the time of day. By using your homemade reflectors to soften the shadows and your backdrop faced towards the early morning light, you'll be amazed at the studio-like quality of your images. Try taking photos at different times of day to see how the difference in light impacts the way things turn out, then book your studio sessions in for the times in which you'll have the best light possible.

Get Creative with Your Backdrops

You may not be able to offer the wide variety of backdrops found in a portrait studio, but that doesn't mean you can't have a little fun. You can use bed sheets for basic colors and then if you want to get creative you can always use paint to create a pattern or add color. If you hang these backdrops opposite a large window (or garage door opening), you'll get the same effects as using a fill light pointed at them.

Don't forget that studio lights are designed to simulate natural light as this is the type of lighting that is the most appealing. If you know how to harness this light and make it work for you, there's absolutely no reason that you shouldn't be able to generate images that compete with those created in the most expensive studio in town. If you have a little creativity and the will to do it, you can easily create your own inexpensive makeshift studio with just a little effort. Really, the tools that you use to get studio lighting doesn't matter as long as you get the quality results that you want.

How To Create An Organized Filing System

Introduction

The test of a good filing system is being able to find something when you need it, regardless of how you choose to organize it. However, there are two basic approaches to setting up a filing system:

· Establish categories for like items by subject (e.g., Hobbies)

· Establish an index based system with files identified numerically by item (e.g., File 1=Document 1)

You can choose the method that makes the most intuitive sense to you. People who have trouble categorizing may feel more comfortable with the indexing approach. Regardless of which type of system you choose, if you feel overwhelmed about where to start, pick a group of papers in any pile. It does not matter where you start.....you just need to start with a manageable subset of paper.

Active files are those which you must access regularly. Historic files are those that it is unlikely you will need to access, but which you must keep for record retention purposes (i.e., tax files). Your inactive files should not be kept in your active file space, if file cabinet space is limited. These files can be stored in boxes in an out of the way location (since you should not be accessing these files regularly). To create your active files, follow the steps outlined below.

Organizing By Category

Step 1 Sort & Discard

Review your papers and discard any papers you no longer need to keep. If you feel unsure about discarding an item, in order to make the decision easier, ask yourself what's the worst thing that could happen if you throw it away? It helps to put things in perspective.

When you decide to keep a paper, sort the paper into various categories/piles. Use post-it notes to label the top page of each pile until a permanent file location/category name is established later.

Use categories that are broad for sorting. For example, if you have lots of information on various leisure interests, you can create a hanging file called "Leisure" (vs. creating a hanging file for every type of leisure topic in your papers).

If you have a major hobby such as photography, for which you collect a lot of information, create a separate hanging folder named "Photography". This makes more sense (so that the "leisure" file won't become too unwieldy).

You can create multiple interior file folders that reside within the hanging file folder, each labeled with the category sub-topic. This makes it easier to search by sub-topic. For example, within the "Leisure" hanging file category you might have file folders for the sub-categories of Art, Music & Reading.

Step 2: Determine Quantity Files Needed

Once you are finished sorting, count and double check the number of "piles" you have to keep. The number of piles equals the number of hanging file folders you will need for your active files. You should buy a minimum of the same number of interior file folders to insert inside the hanging file folders (more if you will have some categories with multiple sub-topics).

Step 3: Identifying/Labeling the Files

Create a set of hanging file folders and associated interior file folder(s) for each pile and its sub-categories.

In order to maintain the transition from active to historic status at the end of each year, the interior files should be labeled by subject and current year (e.g., Life Insurance 2004). This dating approach is best for those categories that involve monthly statements or bills.

For your hanging folders that do contain dated material, it is best to keep static papers that don't change from year to year in front of the interior folders (e.g., the life insurance policy versus the quarterly invoices). This will make it easy to transition files from active to historical status at year end.

Step 4: Estimate file cabinet size

Once you put the appropriate papers in the files, you can get a sense of how many file cabinet drawers you will need. Using a single "Bankers Box" (heavy corrugated storage box) to stand the files up to measure the inches in depth needed is very helpful. These boxes are available at office supply stores, and also will serve later for inactive storage purposes).

The total number of depth inches you have equates to the number of file

drawers you will need in the file cabinet. Be sure to measure the depth of any file cabinet drawers you may be thinking of buying to ensure you'll have enough space (allowing at least 4 inches in each drawer's clearance for sliding & viewing files.

Maintaining the System Annually

At the end of the year, transfer the past year's interior files to inactive storage. Keep the same hanging file folder in place, and create a new set of interior file folders labeled with the New Year. Keep the "static materials inside the hanging file folders from the past year.

Index Based Organizing

Step 1: Discard & Pile

Review your papers and discard any papers you no longer need to keep. For the papers you need to keep, sort your papers into a single pile (no need to categorize).

Step 2: Create the File Index

For each one of these papers or related group of papers (if that relationship is very obvious to you), you will create a numerical file. You will then record File #1's contents in an excel log (or other computerized tool) that describes the contents of the file. For example, if I have a utility bill from March 2004, you would make the description "March 2004 Utility Bill". This file description will get assigned a random file number in a pre-identified location (i.e., File #1 in the office filing cabinet). Should you ever need to find this bill again, you would do an Edit/Find search in Excel and enter "March 2004 utility" to find it. The advantage of this approach is it does not rely on categorizing. When your May 2004 bill arrives, you can assign a totally unrelated file # to it.

You can create & record these indexes with Excel or Access by using their search capabilities. There is also a software program called "The Paper Tiger" from The Hemphill Productivity Institute that is designed for this purpose, and it adds some nice bells and whistles (like tracking files that have been pulled out but not put back). There is a free trial offer and tele-class if you are interested (information can be found at their website http://www.thepapertiger.com/.).

The major disadvantage of the indexing approach is that you must maintain many more files in your storage unit, as well as the data base to track them.

Other Filing Tips

· You should have "action" folders for bills to pay, things to do and pending matters. This serves as a holding place for things you have not had time to get to that week, but that still require action on your part. It is also helpful to have a calendar file to keep things needed for events already recorded in your calendar (e.g., directions to event, handouts, etc.)

· You can use color coded folders to visually identify subject categories

· You can alphabetize your file folders by hanging folder tab name, but if you use staggered file tabs, you'll have to redo the order every time you add or delete a subject.

· Pendaflex, a leading manufacturer recommends that files should be no more than ¾" thick. If you need a file with a greater thickness, you can use the "box bottom" hanging folders.

From Old Masters to Canvas Photo Portraits

Centuries ago, painters like Diego Velazquez created memorable family portraits using oil paint on canvas, displaying a mastery of lighting, composition, and brush technique. Today, this type of painted family portrait, often commissioned by noble families and royalty, hangs in many museums throughout the world. In our technological age, photos have largely replaced oil paintings as the preferred medium for memorializing familial groups. Nonetheless, even the advent of digital photography has not completely wiped out the traditional approach to family portraiture.

The Old Masters were often known and sought after for their skill in portraiture. Among the upper classes, a single or group depiction painted by a skilled artist was one way to ensure that death didn't mean the family name was destined for oblivion. Heads of state, wealthy merchants and their wives -- not to mention mistresses - and illustrious public figures all chased instant immortality in the form of a canvas portrait. Of course, immortality via portraiture was a tradition with a long history dating back centuries. But it gained new life with the rise of painting in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. A canvas portrait by a master like Rembrandt or Holbein was no small endeavor, especially when it depicted a large group; often, subjects were required to sit or stand stiffly for hours on end as the painter sketched.

For hundreds of years, until the arrival of photography until in the mid-19th century, oil or watercolor on canvas was the most popular method of memorializing the family line. Once Louis Daguerre had perfected a means of capturing a still image and transferring it to a permanent surface, the game changed forever. Though artists would continue to find portrait work, Daguerrotypes, then tintypes, and eventually paper-backed photos became the popular medium for family pictures. Economics certainly played a role in the rise of the photo portrait. Indeed, for a long time, only the poorer classes sought to have themselves immortalized in photos. The privileged few retained the use of a professional painter, viewing the family portrait as an expression of artistic merit as much as a personal record. As photos became a matter of mass production, gradually even heads of state yielded to portrait photography.

Nowadays, outside of Buckingham Palace, modern family portraits in oil are scarcely to be found. But the use of canvas photos as a medium for portraiture has discovered a second life in the form of photo transfers. Professional photographic services can turn digital prints or into canvas photos - complete with simulated brushstrokes - at highly affordable prices. So one day in the future, the Joneses of Main Street may hang alongside Spain's royal family, both immortalized on canvas thanks to canvas photos.

Marketing Professional Photography to High School Graduates

Graduate photos can be a lucrative business for a professional photographer. Many photographers know this business niche exists, but have trouble finding a way to effectively market their services to high school seniors and their parents. In order to effectively expand your photography business into the graduate picture market, you must be able to create buzz and excitement among high school seniors with your marketing efforts. Let's discuss a few of the marketing tactics that can help you make the connection with high schools and graduates.

Make Your Potential Customers Work for You

It's no secret that high school grads have mastered the art of sharing information, so let's get them talking about you. Marketing experts have shown that one of the most effective marketing strategies is through word of mouth. So what reason can we give high school seniors to talk about you?

Sometimes bribery works, give students a discount or special package for referrals. You can create a referral program that makes sense for your business model, and may include extra prints, digital negatives or additional poses. Waive the sitting fee if a student refers five other seniors who purchase prints. The variety of incentive programs are endless, just make sure you create a program that will increase the bottom line for your photography business.

Get on the Inside

The most effective marketing efforts focus on forming relationships with people in close contact with your target audience. When it comes to marketing senior picture services, groups like yearbook club and the photography club will be able to promote your services the most effectively. Form a relationship with the yearbook editor and create incentives for the yearbook team to promote your business. This may include a special shoot at an event like a dance or sporting event. These types of student groups have a large influence on their peer's decisions when it comes to photos.

Launch a Social Media Campaign

Social media can be one of the most effective marketing strategies for any small business, including photography. Create a Facebook fan page, Twitter account and MySpace account to promote your senior picture campaign. One way to create hype within your social media network is to sponsor a photo competition. Promote the competition with prizes, like a free senior photo sitting for the winner, and require participants to become your friend. Once you have created your social media network, you will find that there are many ways to network with potential customers and other professionals in the photography industry.

Team Up with Different High Schools

Often administrators will actually make the decision of a photographer for their students. By creating relationships with the administrators of different high schools, you will increase the chances that the school will sponsor or promote your business when it comes to the photography needs of students. Sometimes all it takes is a phone call to befriend the principal or office manager of a school. Other times you will need to make a name for yourself on campus by donating time and photography services at a discounted price or even free of charge. This is obviously a marketing method used to build a rapport with schools over a long period of time. However, in schools, relationships carefully built can be fruitful for many years.

Advertise an Apprenticeship

Photography enthusiasts in high school generally form photography classes or clubs. Contact the instructor or advisor of the class or club and ask them to have students apply for an apprenticeship with a professional photographer. Brace yourself because the enthusiastic responses from the students may shock you. Form a working relationship with the apprentice you choose. This person can be an asset to you senior picture marketing campaign, and give you insight into the culture of the school. Allow this apprentice to market your services for you through flyers and business cards and personal interactions with other clubs and events. You can also let your apprentice help you in photographing other seniors, particularly in informal or 'daily life' shots. They can take the resulting photos to school to show off and advertise.

These are just a few ways that you can begin to capture the senior picture market with high schools in your area. You will find that schools often talk, and if you devote time and energy to developing solid relationships with you clients; schools will begin to call you, instead of having to market to them!

Japanese Calligraphy History

Japanese calligraphy is a visual art, using the symbols of the Japanese language (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji).

5th century C.E. is the time period in which Kanji (Chinese characters) was fully used in Japan. By the 6th century, there were about 50,000 Kanji and 5 major styles of calligraphy, though only 3 are mainly used today. There are also a number of other styles that are not widely used, but do exist. Japanese calligraphy and Chinese calligraphy are very much alike, since it derived from Chinese calligraphy. The technique and tools are essentially the same. The styles do differ quite a bit, such as Japan's own character system. Kana (Hiragana and Katakana).

During the Heian period, a new style of calligraphy was created, a style that made Japanese calligraphy unique from chinese calligraphy. It was first used in a poem written back in 749 C.E. Soon after, the official Japanese way of calligraphy was founded, which was known as wayo. Wayo was practiced as a Japanese art style until the mid 19th century. The founders of Wayo were the Sanseki, which translates to "three brush traces." The three were known as: Ono no Michikaze, Fujiwara no Yukinari, and Fujiwara no Sukemasa. Michikaze served as an archetype for a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, called the Shoren-in, and through this he developed another style of Japanese calligraphy, Oie. It was used for official documents during the Edo period of Japan. Yukinari (known as the master of kana) founded Sensoji (Buddhist Temple) calligraphy, which later became the leading style of wayo.

Tokugawa Ieyasu became shogun in 1603, and was in power until his death in 1616. This marked the beginning of the Edo era, which was a time of peace for Japan that lasted 250 years. Japan only used a style called karayo during this time. The Daishi school focused on the study of the "eight principles of the character yong" and the and 72 types of "brush energy." In 1664, a book was made based on these principles, which continued its development.

Hon'ami Koetsu, Konoe Nobutada, and Shokado Shojo; those three were known as the three Kan'ei Sanpitsu. Koetsu painted a backdrop of decorative and floral patterns, along with his calligraphy provided a poetic essence. Because of this unique calligraphy to Japan, he is considered one of the greatest calligraphers using the wayo style of calligraphy. Nobutada's role in art has been highly overlooked due to his aristocracy, though he was a poet, calligrapher, painter and diarist. Shojo dedicated himself to, painting, poetry, and the tea ceremony. The end of the Edo period meant studies turned to the main three styles: Kaisho, Gyosho, and Sosho.

In modern times, in Japan, Japanese calligraphy is an elementary school subject, and in high school an elective. Several colleges do have Japanese calligraphy departments though. Western artists have also been influenced by Japanese calligraphy, and studied it as well as worked on their own art of course! Today, it is a hobby taken by many.

Lastly, there is a society in present time known as the Bokuteki-kai. This society focuses on training professional calligraphers, and the better you are, the higher you rank, eventually making you a teacher in the art of Japanese calligraphy.

Study Grants For Women Over 30

Older women face many obstacles when they want to go back to school. For one thing, studying is a difficult habit to get back into. For another, it can be very embarrassing to step into the classroom only to be surrounded by an ocean of much younger faces. And then there is the matter of funding their studies. Many older women who need to return to school are not well off, and need grants for women over 30 to pay for their tuition.

All these difficulties may not matter to you if you are in your 40-s or 50-s and your husband is paying for you to go back to school because your kids are all grown up and you are getting bored at home. But what if you had been a housewife for the past decade or two, and something out of your control has forced you into the job market? You have probably already discovered that most jobs pay peanuts unless you have a college degree. On the other hand, if you have been a working mother all this time, you may have come up against an unbreakable wall in your career. You may be seeing younger colleagues getting promotions that should rightfully be yours just because they have a better education. In this case, you definitely need to upgrade your education.

You have probably already investigated all of the better-known educational grants and scholarships. Most of them have one problem - they take aim at younger students. They are intended to help recent high school graduates get into college, and do not help an older woman who wants to go back to school. Most study grants for women over 30 are not well-publicized.

One exception is the Pell grant. Many recipients of this grant study in online colleges like the University of Phoenix. Unfortunately, it only covers about 30% to 60% of your tuition. If you are a single working mother at her mid-career trying to upgrade herself, this might well be enough to make a difference.

That means a housewife returning to the workforce and seeking higher education needs to find additional educational grants for women over 30 if they want to get their college degree. But how do you find these additional educational aid programs? These are quite highly-specialized and not many college financial aid officers are familiar with them.

You have probably already gone to FAFSA's website. But have you gone to grants.gov to look for a list of federal grants applicable to you? In theory, it collects information about all the grants administered by the US government. In practice, you should only use it as a starting point. Once you have searched their database, you should visit the websites of each government agency to look for additional financial aid programs not listed in grants.gov.

Apart from the government, there are also many private foundations who offer grants for women over 30 to go back to school. The following are just a few of the more prominent charities - the Philanthropic Educational Organization, the Jeannette Rankin Foundation, and the Talbots Charitable Foundation. And these are just the general scholarship programs that aim to help older women.

There are also specific scholarships for women studying science, maths, computing technology, even arts, music and photography. All you need to do is patiently comb through the internet search results using Google, Bing and Yahoo.

Many older women can have difficulty financing their further education. Fortunately, there are more than a few college grants for women over 30 for those who are willing to work hard.

Where to Learn Modeling Poses to Use For Photography Shoots

If you are a model or aspiring to be one, you know the importance of posing for pictures.  When you look through fashion or glamour magazines you often see women wearing swimsuits and think that this is the only type of modeling there is.

The truth of the matter is, there are many types of models, super young and super mature, male and female and, to be successful in the modeling world it is important to know the many different poses and expressions to give your photographer so that you can continue to book jobs, after you finish a photo shoot.

Photographers love models who are multi-faceted and that can produce many different poses in a photo shoot. If you are not sure of all the different positions and attitudes that a photographer may want, it may be necessary to take a modeling class so that you learn at least the bare minimum of how to pose for the camera.

Females and Males

There are classes that are solely for the female model.  However, if you are a male who wants to get into modeling, there are courses that you can study as well. When taking these classes make sure that you not only listen to the person instructing the class, but to the other models in the class with you.  They may have tips to share that they have picked up from working with certain photographers.

Although the modeling industry appears cut-throat, those who work in it want to help others succeed as well.  By sharing with each other some of the photography modeling pose ideas, you can further your career, as well as the careers of others.

Teenagers

If you are one of the many teenage models out there wanting to get into the field, taking a modeling or acting class is a must.  In this formal setting, not only will you learn about the industry, but you will also learn the modeling poses you need when working for professional photographers that most often get booked for campaigns.

By taking classes and getting advice, you can take advantage of the knowledge that you need to have a long lasting career.

Once you start knowing how to pose, you can give your all to the photographer instead of grasping for ideas. Then you will be in a position to book more modeling jobs and have a lucrative career as a glamour, fashion or maybe even a top list runway model. Good luck!

Using Annnette Himstedt Dolls As Photo Subjects

When Annette Himstedt came on the scene in the doll world around 1987 with Kathe on the cover of Doll Reader magazine, to date the doll collector had never had such a life-like affordable and vinyl doll of quality to have as her/his own. Annette's dolls had the vivid realism of real children from early Lisa with her laughing open mouth and mismatched teeth to big Kasimir with his own angled jaw, dimples, freckles and teeth. The year Kasimir was made, the Children of the World were the largest child dolls we'd ever seen. This meant collectors were able to purchase clothing in children's stores or to use a favorite dress kept from a child's younger years, not to mention all the seamstresses of doll clothes who were able to let their imaginations go wild. And shoes. These dolls had big feet that fit real kids' shoes. In more recent years, Annette's two 7 year old sized child dolls surpassed any life-like child dolls ever made. Ineke poses for many shots at my house, her open laughing mouth full of laughter and e king answering grins in viewers of my work. Fina and Sina almost as large with the first fully flexible joints in elbows and knees as well as hips, waist and neck allowed the photographer to create many more poses and to incorporate more action style photos in a shoot.

For my own interest in doll's as subjects photography I was suddenly thrilled to take pictures and create photographic stories of realistic doll-children going about their daily life of school, washing up, caring for baby sister or brother, baking cookies and so on. I posed my first Annette Himstedt children the first time in the kitchen with cookie dough and cutters, flour smears on their faces. In my earlier life, I'd worked with deaf children and gotten my degree in child and family studies. Thus, one of my Himstedt 'kids had hearing loss with a self-designed phonic ear. The shape of his hands were with a slight tilt in appropriate fingerspelling letters to "say" "I love you!" My kids joined Cub Scouts and Brownies, went to the doctor and veterinarian and rode in the car to McDonalds. Someone had a broken leg. I tried my best to make these children as multi faceted as possible. All children are beautiful no matter what their particular limitations. I was also able to volunteer for an All Through The House function put on at Christmas time by an organization with "children" posed through out the rooms of the house used participating in traditional holiday activities, including a weighted porcelain baby maybe of teething age, created by Judith Turner who was sobbing her little heart out in her highchair at the family table.

I put braces on Kasimir. Lisa learned with use of a pink balloon to blow bubbles. With fishline helping her, Lisa rode a skateboard down the walk. She used a hula hoop. In my current photography series, Ilai is featured in many stories: a tea party with dragons, discovering her new baby chicks, or walking in the snow with her pot bellied pig. And Himstedt dolls are of a size that they really lend themselves to posing with cooperative real animals. So Annette's dolls in my household have lives and adventures of their own. It would not have been possible to create such an array of photo-stories without this life-like subject doll- line.

It is a wondrous thing for a doll collector, to have a beloved doll and then to see a photographer's work using his/her same Himstedt, revealing the secret life, if you will, of your own loved friend. This allows the photo collector to participate in the doll's world without having to do all the work themselves. Annette Himstedt children dolls were also a great change from fashion dolls and traditional porcelain baby dolls. It is possible to mix them in a photo study with other artist's life sized babies--Rolanda Heimer's babies or Lossnitzer's Dribble babies produced by Goetz Co., to create fascinating compositions and fantasies.

A Regular Guy's Thoughts and Opinions on the Maxi Pro & Equine Thumper Massagers

After doing a fair amount of online research I purchased the Maxi Pro Thumper Massager for my wife's birthday earlier this year. Thumper makes the claim that many of their massagers (including this one) are used by loads of industry professionals (physical therapists, chiropractors, sports teams, etc.). I am a former collegiate athlete now turned recreational athlete, but I work out (hard) every day or every other day, so I the idea that this was a "professional" model rather than something you'd find at Walmart or Target appealed to me. We already had a Homedics hand-held/wand massager, but it just wasn't powerful enough to get deep into large sore muscles like the quadriceps and hamstrings.

I did some shopping and searching online and eventually found the Comfort Store Direct in Lewis Center, Ohio, USA had the best price (and free shipping at the time), so I bought it from them.

The unit arrived a week later in a specially designed box, so it was undamaged and ready to go right out of the box. The Maxi Pro is primarily designed for 2 person use, so I patiently waited for my wife to come home to give it a shot. My wife loved the Maxi Pro immediately but I wasn't quite sold on it. Don't get me wrong, I did like it and it was MUCH easier to use than hand-held/wand massagers, but I quickly noted that the only real setting on the unit that was having much of an effect on me was level 5, the highest setting. As far as I was concerned, the other 4 lower settings really didn't do much at all.

Since we were using the Maxi Pro on its highest setting I consulted their web site for answers and found that Thumper has a more powerful an Equine version of this unit, which was especially designed for elite athletes and of course horses. This unit looks the same as the Maxi Pro but apparently has a stronger motor in it.

Over the course of the next few days I wrested with the idea of going through the bother of sending the Maxi Pro back and getting the Equine model. After 3 days I cracked and gave in. I contacted the Comfort Store Direct and requested a return authorization number, which they gladly gave me - by the way, both my wife and I dealt with these folks and they were always pleasant. I shipped the Maxi Pro back at a cost of about $15 (not bad) and came to the conclusion that the extra $40 for the Equine more powerful motor would be worth it.

When the Equine unit arrived I gave it a shot on my quadriceps (don't need 2 people for this), and I have to say that I was initially disappointed with it. I really expected a notable difference in power between the two units but I just didn't feel it. Later that night my wife tried the unit and while she agreed with me that it might not be significantly more powerful, she felt it might be slightly better.

I sent Thumper an email asking if perhaps I got an underpowered unit and indicated that I was a little disappointed with this new model. To their credit, a Thumper representative responded to me within 24 business hours, she kindly explained that, "The depth of the stroke on the Equine Thumper is 15% higher than with the Maxi Pro. The drive assembly which is the mechanism responsible for the "punch" has a different tolerance than the one on the Maxi Pro therefore the impact is greater."

The Thumper rep indicated that I could return the product for a refund if I would like, which I appreciated. I emailed her back and indicated that my wife really did like the unit (and I didn't think it was too bad) so a refund would not be necessary.

PROS:

  • The unit is heavy (8 lbs), but it actually works to its advantage. You don't need to press down on the massager to feel pressure; the weight of the unit does it for you.

  • The two handles on the unit make it easy to move manipulate/move/adjust.

  • If you are flexible and a little creative, you can actually use the Maxi Pro/Equine Model without someone else assisting

  • Quiet. In fact, it's much quieter than the hand-held/wand unit we have that's less powerful. It's not difficult to watch television and use the unit at the same time.

  • Very easy to use on someone. In fact, you can often place the unit on someone (like the lumbar part of the back) and the unit will work without you having to hold it at all. You may have to balance it with just a couple of fingers just so it stays in place - either way it's easy.

  • Instead of a vibrating motion most massagers have, this one actually pounds up and down like a piston (you can actually see it doing this). I found this approach was much more effective in giving/receiving massages.

  • Fast, friendly customer service - the rep I emailed at Thumper was very nice.

  • Feels pretty sturdy and durable...although I've only had it for a few weeks.

  • Don't get that fatigued feeling in your hands, wrists and forearms that you do from vibrating hand-held/wand massagers. It really doesn't require a lot of effort to give someone a massage.

  • Unit does not heat up during or after use.

CONS:

  • Not portable if you're traveling, but that wasn't really a concern of ours.

  • For the most part, this is a 2-person effort, using the massager by yourself is doable but tricky.

  • Still would like it to have a higher, more powerful setting for both units.

  • The instructional DVD they send you is worthless. In fact, there was a depth adjustment dial at the bottom of both units that I didn't even know until the Thumper rep let me know via email.

BOTTOM LINE:
I'd recommend this unit to anyone in the market for a personal massager that's tried other vibrating models that don't quite get into the muscles enough. It's easy to use, but I'd suggest purchasing the unit if you have a partner that's willing and able to work with you. At around $300 it's not the cheapest model out there. Personally I'd go with the Maxi Pro since it's less expensive and I didn't feel a tremendous difference between it and the Equine model.

Forensics Vs Forensic Science

If you bring up forensics in a conversation, those involved will often start thinking of scenes from the television show CSI (Crime Scene Investigation). It's synonymous with scouring crime scenes for minute clues to help criminal investigators create leads in various cases.

Because of the misunderstanding that's developed about criminal investigations and forensics, many don't realize that there is an acute difference between forensics and forensic science.

Currently, forensic science gets shortened in most discussions to "forensics." The word "forensic" actually relates to debates, and comes from the Latin word "forensis" or "of or before the forum." This concept became most prominent in ancient Rome where both the accused and the accuser involved in a judicial case had to advance their arguments in front of a public forum. This led to the usage of the term "forensics" for both public debate and the presentation of legal evidence.

This concept of "evidence" is what has caused it to run parallel and merge with forensic science. As the judicial system evolved, so, too, did the evidence that was required in cases. No longer was it a matter of verbal debate; instead other forms of evidence were necessary. The concept, that being "forensic" or "before the forum" still holds true. The only thing that has changed is the type of evidence that's being presented.

While some modern dictionaries will actually merge the two and provide similar or identical definitions, they are quite separate by origin and practical application.

The term forensics refers to public debate which includes the presentation of evidence and rhetoric. Forensic Science is something different. It deals specifically with the gathering, identification, research, and scientific interpretation of evidence to determine such things as who was involved in a crime.

In addition to confusing the terms forensics and forensic science, people often mistake forensic science for criminalistics. However, it's important to keep these terms in context too. Forensic science involves any discipline that can be applied to evidence. Criminalistics is just one of the subdivisions of forensic science.

Some of the disciplines that fall under the umbrella of "forensic science" are:

  • Computer Forensics

  • Forensic Accounting

  • Forensic Audio Engineering

  • Forensic Linguistics

  • Forensic Pathology

  • Forensic Psychology

  • Forensic Engineering

  • Criminalistics

Criminalistics itself is the scientific discipline which brings together various natural sciences such as biology and chemistry to the examination, identification, and comparison of certain types of evidence. Criminalists deal with biological evidence including DNA and bodily fluids, trace evidence such as fibers, hair, and soil, and impression evidence such as fingerprints and tire tracks. They also are involved with ballistics, drug analysis, crime scene photography and reconstruction.

As you can see, the forensic sciences deal specifically with the research and examination of evidence so that such evidence can be admitted to and used within the legal system. Forensics on the other hand should be viewed not as the science behind the evidence, but as the presentation and use of the research once it's completed.

Growing Up With a Bipolar Mother

When I was a kid, everyone said my mom was brilliant, and indeed, she was. She didn't finish high school, but had my older brother instead. Once she decided she wanted to learn something, she just learned it! She had an upbeat personality. People liked her energy and witty sense of humor. She was a young mother of seven children. She also had bipolar disorder.

How Her Mental Illness Progressed

At first, she started doing strange things like running outside barefoot in her nightgown at night in the middle of winter. Her temper became worse. I told myself that most of these symptoms would have occurred in anyone because of the pressures of raising a large family on a farm.

Then, one day in a fit of temper, she tried to kill me with a carving knife. My older brother and I placed a cowbell on my door, so that if she came into my room in the middle of the night, I would know she was there, and be able to defend myself.

A Wrong Diagnosis of Schizophrenia
Our dad had her placed in a mental hospital where she stayed for some time. This was the 1960s before too much was known about various mental illnesses. The psychiatrists diagnosed our mom with schizophrenia, gave her some medication, and sent her home.

The medication made her feel funny, like she wasn't fully herself, and so she didn't take it. Another suicide attempt sent her back to the hospital. After she came home, things got progressively worse. She went back to the mental hospital, and I took over the household. At the age of twelve, I became an adult. I cooked, cleaned, took care of my brothers and sisters, and worked outside in the barns.

Finally, when my mom came home, I didn't want anything to do with her. Our dad begged for a truce between us. Bitterness, anger, and hurt filled my heart. My hatred for her became apparent to everyone.

About the same time, our parents announced that they were getting a divorce. It upset me horribly. Our mom and dad separated, and our mom moved out, taking the four youngest children with her.

Losing Hope and Faith

When I was younger, I had prayed for God to heal all of us, and make us happy again. We had been such an idyllic family! As things became worse, we stopped going to church, and I stopped praying. It seemed hopeless.

Fast-forward to 1999. My husband and I were in San Francisco when my older brother called, and said that our mom had tried to kill her husband. (Our mom had remarried one year after our parents divorced.) They took her off in a strait jacket, and placed her in mandatory detainment in the state mental hospital.

A New Diagnosis: Bipolar Disorder

While detained in the state's mental hospital, the psychiatrists diagnosed her with bipolar disorder, not schizophrenia, and placed her on the right medication for the first time in her life. It calmed the manic part of her personality, stopped the cycling between mania and depression, and she became stable.

What Did I Learn Through All Of This?

First, I learned that bipolar disorder is hereditary: a person may inherit the whole thing or inherit it in part, the fullest cycling or a lesser cycling, or one may get either the manic side or the depressed side. It was truly a revelation. It explained a lot about me, and my brothers and sisters. Knowing this, we have a much better chance of trying to control it.

Second, I learned that I do love my mother. Bipolar disorder demands that she always be the center of attention. That is part of the illness. She has all the potential to be normal when she takes her medication, and then she can be very sweet and loving.

Thirdly, not taking the prescribed medication is a natural disaster. She doesn't like to take it because it takes away too much of the manic side of her personality, and that is precisely what people are drawn towards. If she doesn't take her meds, it leads to the manic-depressive cycling again.

Lastly, I have learned that God is greater than all problems. His love overcomes everything that we have endured on earth, and those abuses no longer matter. Our Lord takes them away, and replaces them with love. His love for us is so powerful that my bitterness disappeared. He, indeed, has finally put everything right. I've forgiven my mom, and my childlike faith has returned.

A Book Is Written

That's not the only miracle. God gave me a miracle in my first fiction novel: Innocence: Simplicity of Spirit. Somehow, He drew out of me all the good experiences of my childhood, and allowed me to reflect on them. I enjoyed remembering the good years before she became ill. God has blessed me with this novel, and I hope it will bless you, too.

Alternative to Drop-Shipping - Drop-Ship Fulfillment Services

For those frustrated with the drop-shipping process or who are simply looking for a change of pace, there are a number of alternatives that can be explored. Some of these resources are from larger, well-known companies, and others come from up-and-coming players in the wholesale industry.

Fulfillment by Amazon

Amazon.com is a leading online retailer, if not the leading online retailer. However, the online superstore also offers a service called Fulfillment by Amazon, which allows wholesalers who drop-ship to sell their products online with Amazon doing much of the heavy lifting. Amazon will store, package, and ship merchandise on behalf of sellers as well as provide customer service if needed. Fulfillment by Amazon also allows sellers to have their orders filled from multiple sales channels; all while being stored in one of Amazon's fulfillment centers.

ShipMyOrders.com

ShipMyOrders provides order fulfillment, logistics, and warehousing for a wide range of products, including DVDs, books, cosmetics, electronics, and more. ShipMyOrders specializes in warehousing, order processing, and fulfillment as well as distribution to customers worldwide. Among the company's services are merchandise storage, product photography, and customer service.

National Fulfillment Services

National Fulfillment Services serves business-to-business companies as well as consumer-facing entities. The company, in business for more than 45 years, serves a wide range of industries, and its warehouse is able to ship products using any standard carrier. Additionally, NFS can gift wrap products, include special promotional materials and messages, or provide other specialized packaging needs.

Bonanzle

Bonanzle is one of the growing newcomers to the scene and aims to be the "simplest marketplace online." The company recently picked up $1 million in venture capital funding and is quickly nipping at the heels of larger companies in the drop-shipping arena. Bonanzle users can quickly import their eBay drop-shipping listings onto the site, and its fees are significantly lower than those on eBay. For instance, items listed at less than $50 incur a $1 final value fee, whereas on eBay many final value fees are a flat 12 percent. Another bonus is there are absolutely no listing fees on Bonanzle.

eCrater

eCrater is another alternative to drop-shipping and is similarly light on the fees that frustrate many wholesalers who drop-ship. Among the many touted benefits of eCrater are the site's unlimited categories and products available to sellers. eCrater is also compatible with PayPal and Google Checkout, and merchants can use up to 10 photos per listing at no cost whatsoever. As a "100% totally, completely free" site, eCrater also offers bulk listings, eBay listing imports, and fully editable stores at no cost to users. Users can also make their storefront addresses customizable, with a personal eCrater URL included for free. One thing to note is eCrater's listings are based on fixed prices, so those looking for auction-style sales should look elsewhere.

Highwire

A relatively newer company, Highwire strives to take the guesswork out of online merchandising with its suite of products and services. From marketing and site design to product management and order processing, Highwire aims to make it easy and affordable for drop-shippers to create their own online stores. Among Highwire's benefits, the site offers flexible shipping options depending on your businesses' needs, and shipping rates are calculated in real time. Highwire's services come on a multitier pricing scale, ranging from absolutely free to about $50 a month for premium service.

Payvment

Integrated into Facebook, Payvment is new but may have the advantage of a captive audience in Facebook's millions of users. The service allows drop-shippers that already have a Facebook fan page to integrate the shopping experience on Facebook; buyers no longer have to navigate away from Facebook to purchase your wares. Payment's Open Cart Network lets customers finalize purchases from any Facebook storefront, so the chance of users abandoning their shopping carts is diminished. Payvment supports more than 20 currencies and is TRUSTe certified. You don't need a merchant account to use Payvment, but will need a PayPal account to collect payments. Customers can pay using PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover.

SaleHoo

While not directly in the drop-shipping business itself, SaleHoo can point you in the right direction. The site serves as a directory to other drop-shippers, providing product reviews, supplier information, and many other details that buyers are looking for. The site features more than 8,000 legitimate drop-shippers, manufacturers, wholesalers, and liquidators. All of SaleHoo's suppliers are verified, and the site utilizes a review system to weed out dishonest dealers.
