Selling Photos Online For Beginners - Is Microstock Or Macrostock Better?

If you are interested in earning some extra income through selling your digital photos online, then one of the easiest ways to enter into this business is by contracting with a stock photo agency who will represent and sell your photos online for you. However, there are literally hundreds of microstock and macrostock photo companies to choose from. But which is best for a new, aspiring stock photographer?

To answer this question best for yourself, you need to understand the difference between micro and macrostock photo companies. Macrostock photo companies represent some of the best, professional photographers in the country. They can afford to pay their photographers top price for their digital photos, but they also often quite selective with who they contract with for their photos. If you have worked as a professional photographer for many years, or have a superb photography portfolio, you may want to approach a macrostock photo agency for representation. You should not be discouraged, however, if they turn you down because often the competition to work with these agencies is quite stiff.

Microstock photo agencies, on the other hand, is often ideal for new digital photographers. On the downside, however, they often pay little for your photos. To succeed with microstock photo agencies, you will find it will be more of a matter of numbers of photographs you have available than the quality of these photos. To put it simply, the more photos you have available for sale, the more you will earn from a microstock photo agency relationship. This is not to say that the photos you submit do not need to be good quality - they still do, although they do not generally need to be at the level a macrostock photo agency would demand. With a broad portfolio of decent photographs for sale, you can earn a good residual income from microstock photograph sales.
