The city of Charleston, South Carolina dates back to 1670 (when it was originally called Charles Towne), making it the oldest city in the state. The city has grown substantially since its humble beginnings alongside the Ashley River and is currently the second largest city in the state, after Columbia - the state capital.

Local history is reflected in many well-preserved buildings along the Battery and in other parts of the city. Numerous museums also bear testament to the past One interesting example is the Powder Magazine, the oldest public building in the city that having started out its life as a gunpowder magazine in 1713.
